Matarbari Tales
A Children Story Book
2025
Publication Design
“Matarbari Tales” is a publication for the exhibition “Home Is Where The Heart Is” curated by Mahenaz Chowdhury as a part of the Climate Futures: South Asia programme from British Council.
The book is conceived as a stitched object where stories, pages, and materials come together visibly and honestly. Four books of different sizes are bound as one through Japanese stab binding, allowing children to see how a book is held together and to read its structure alongside its stories.
Printed on locally sourced paper and produced without glue or plastic, the book relies on handmade binding and simple materials. Its making is slow, tactile, and climate-conscious, valuing care over excess.
Shifts in size and color introduce play and rhythm, echoing the spirit of Nakshi Katha, where fragments of different hues and narratives are sewn into a single, meaningful whole. Each story remains distinct, yet connected.
Grounded in minimal form and ease of reading, the book invites young readers not only to read, but to notice - to hold a book that reveals how it is made, and why that matters.
